SSIP Certificate

An SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) Certificate confirms that a contractor meets a defined standard of health and safety competence. It is recognised across the construction industry and often required for tendering on commercial projects. SSIP member schemes include CHAS, SafeContractor, Constructionline, and SMAS, all of which are mutually recognised so one certification satisfies all.

Frequently asked questions about SSIP

What is SSIP?
SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) is an umbrella body that sets a standard for health and safety pre-qualification. Contractors who hold an SSIP-recognised certificate have been independently assessed against a core set of health and safety criteria based on PAS 91.
Which SSIP scheme should I join?
There are several member schemes including CHAS, SafeContractor, Constructionline, and SMAS. All are mutually recognised under the SSIP umbrella, so one certification is accepted by all. Choose based on cost and which scheme your clients ask for most.
How do I get SSIP accreditation?
Apply through any SSIP member scheme. You will need to submit your health and safety policy, risk assessments, training records, insurance certificates, and accident records. An assessor reviews your documentation and may ask follow-up questions. Most applications take 2-4 weeks.
What are the SSIP requirements?
You need a written health and safety policy, documented risk assessments and method statements, evidence of employee training and competence, valid employers liability insurance, accident reporting procedures, and arrangements for monitoring health and safety on site.
Can I check if a contractor has SSIP?
Yes. Each member scheme has an online search tool where you can verify a contractor's current accreditation status. You can also ask the contractor for their certificate, which will show the scheme name, expiry date, and scope of work covered.
Do sole traders need SSIP?
SSIP is not a legal requirement, but many principal contractors and public-sector clients will not let you on site without it. If you tender for commercial work or council contracts, SSIP accreditation is effectively essential regardless of company size.
