Frequently asked questions about Blower Door Test

What ACH50 does the energy code require?
Under the 2021 IECC, dwellings must not exceed 5 ACH50 in Climate Zones 0–2 and 3 ACH50 in Zones 3–8. Attached dwelling units may alternatively show not more than 0.30 CFM50 per square foot of enclosure area. States frequently amend these limits, so the report records the requirement actually adopted for the project.
Who can perform the test?
The IECC requires testing by an approved third party — commonly a RESNET HERS rater, a BPI analyst or a jurisdiction-approved tester, using ANSI/RESNET/ICC 380, ASTM E779 or ASTM E1827.
