Why does CSST need to be bonded?
CSST has a thinner wall than rigid black-iron pipe, so a nearby lightning strike or electrical fault can arc through the tubing wall and cause a gas leak or fire. NFPA 54 requires any gas piping system that includes CSST to be bonded to the building’s grounding electrode system to give a fault path an easier route than through the tubing.
What size bonding conductor is required?
NFPA 54 §7.12.2 requires a bonding jumper not smaller than 6 AWG copper (or equivalent), connected to a metallic pipe or fitting between the point of delivery and the first CSST fitting, with a length to the grounding electrode system not exceeding 75 feet. Arc-resistant/jacketed CSST follows §7.12.3 and the manufacturer’s specific instructions.
