Frequently asked questions about DWV Test Report

How is a DWV system pressure tested?
Per IPC Section 312.2, a completed drain, waste and vent system is tested by water (each section filled to at least 10 feet above the highest fitting, held 15 minutes), by air for piping other than plastic (5 PSI or 10 inches of mercury column, held 15 minutes without adding air), or by vacuum for plastic piping. All three must show the system leak-free before it is concealed.
Can I air-test a plastic DWV system?
The IPC air test option applies to piping other than plastic. Plastic DWV systems use the water test or, since the 2021 IPC, an alternate vacuum test — useful where freezing temperatures make a water test impractical. Confirm which method your local jurisdiction accepts.
