Frequently asked questions about Load Study

When do I need a load calculation?
A load calculation is typically required when upgrading a service, adding significant load such as an EV charger, heat pump or hot tub, or when a permit application asks you to demonstrate the service has spare capacity.
What is the difference between the standard and optional method?
NEC 220 Part III sets out the standard method, applying demand factors category by category. The optional method (NEC 220.82 for dwellings) uses a simplified percentage-based calculation. Both are valid; the optional method often yields a smaller result for homes.
