How is the monthly generator test performed?

NFPA 110 requires the emergency generator to run under load for at least 30 minutes at least monthly, reaching at least 30% of its nameplate kW rating so exhaust temperatures stay high enough to avoid wet-stacking (unburned fuel and carbon buildup in the engine and exhaust).

What if the monthly test can't reach 30% load?

If the building's normal load doesn't reach 30% of nameplate, NFPA 110 requires an annual supplemental load bank test — commonly run at 50% of nameplate for 30 minutes, then 75% for 1 hour. Level 1 emergency power supply systems (life-safety systems such as hospitals) also require a full-load bank test at least once every 36 months.
