Why does an IR survey need the electrical load at the time of inspection?
A hot connection may not show up under light load. NFPA 70B recommends surveying equipment under at least 40% of normal load so a genuine overheating problem has a chance to show a meaningful temperature rise above a similar, unaffected component.
Who is qualified to perform an infrared survey?
Most surveyors hold a Level I or II thermography certification (for example under ASNT SNT-TC-1A or the Infraspection Institute / ITC schemes) rather than a state electrical license, since the survey itself is a diagnostic inspection rather than electrical work.
