The wedge is the target friction rate range — 0.06 to 0.18 in. w.c. per 100 ft — that keeps duct sizing realistic. Friction rate is calculated as (available static pressure × 100) ÷ total effective length of the longest run. A rate outside the wedge means the design needs revision before the ducts are installed.
How does Manual D relate to Manual J and Manual S?
Manual J calculates the heating/cooling loads for the building. Manual S selects equipment matched to those loads. Manual D then designs the duct system to deliver the equipment’s design airflow to each room without excessive pressure drop or noise.
