Subcooling or superheat — which method should I use?
It depends on the metering device, not preference. Systems with a thermostatic or electronic expansion valve (TXV/EXV) are charged by subcooling; systems with a fixed orifice or piston are charged by superheat. Using the wrong method for the metering device gives an inaccurate charge.
Why do ambient conditions matter for this test?
Target subcooling and superheat values from the manufacturer’s chart are only valid within specific outdoor and indoor temperature ranges. Testing outside those conditions (e.g. a cool morning, or with airflow not yet confirmed adequate) can make a correctly-charged system look wrong, or a mischarged system look fine.
