How far must a water line be from a sewer line?
IPC Section 603.2 requires 5 feet of undisturbed or compacted earth between the water service and a building sewer that is not made of the materials in IPC Table 702.2. A sewer made of those materials may share the trench. The separation also does not apply where the water service crosses the sewer and is sleeved for 5 feet either side of it, or where the water service is at least 12 inches above the top of the sewer. Many states and utilities set a larger distance, so confirm what your AHJ requires.
