The MCS Installer Scheme Overhaul: 2026 Changes for Installers

The certification scheme behind heat pumps and solar is being rebuilt around delivered quality, not paperwork.

MCS is the quality mark that sits behind small-scale renewable installations, and it is the gateway to grants like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Through 2026 the scheme is being significantly redeveloped, and installers are being moved onto the new model in a phased rollout.

A redeveloped installer scheme

The redeveloped scheme shifts the emphasis from paperwork towards delivered quality. The main changes include:

  • A reduced focus on documentation in favour of assessing the quality of work actually delivered.
  • Risk-based assessment frequency, so consistently strong installers are assessed differently from higher-risk ones.
  • Standardised assessments and a more direct relationship between the installer and MCS.
  • Centralised customer complaint management.
  • Consumer Code membership no longer being mandatory.

New product standards and financial protection

Alongside the scheme changes, Issue 8.0 of the Heat Pump Product Standard (MCS-007) was published on 5 December 2025, with compliance mandatory for products to be certified from 5 December 2026. And from February 2026, MCS approved new financial protection products: every installer must now provide an MCS-approved financial protection product on the customer's behalf, giving consumers a safety net if an installation issue cannot otherwise be resolved.

Heat pumps are not just for winter

With the UK under a red extreme heat warning and temperatures near 38°C this week, it is worth remembering that air source heat pumps can run in reverse to cool as well as heat. As cooling demand climbs, that dual capability is becoming a real selling point.

What it means for you

If you install heat pumps or solar, the practical upshot is less form-filling but a sharper focus on the standard of the finished job, plus a new obligation to arrange financial protection on every install. The certification that proves the work, such as an MCS heat pump certificate or an MCS solar PV certificate, remains the document that unlocks grants and reassures the customer.
