Backflow Prevention (RPZ Valve) Test Certificate

An RPZ (Reduced Pressure Zone) valve test certificate confirms that a backflow prevention device has been tested and is functioning correctly to prevent contamination of the public water supply. RPZ valves must be tested at least every 12 months, or more often where the water undertaker sets a shorter interval, by a competent RPZ tester, and the results recorded on a test report.

Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, BS EN 12729, Water Undertakers’ RPZ Approved Installation Method (Issue 3, January 2025)Valid: Test due date set by the water undertaker, at most 12 months apart

Frequently asked questions about RPZ Valve Test

How often must RPZ valves be tested?
At least every 12 months, or more often if the local water undertaker sets a shorter interval as a condition of consent. The undertaker sets the test due date, which cannot be changed without its agreement, and an annual test can be done no earlier than 30 days before it. The test report must reach the undertaker within 10 working days, and a failed test must be reported within 24 hours.
Who can test an RPZ valve?
RPZ valves must be tested by someone who has completed an approved RPZ testing course and holds a current certificate of competence. Testers use calibrated differential pressure test kits.
