Yes, certain types of plumbing work must be notified to your local water company in advance. The list is the Table in regulation 5 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. It includes a new building, extending or altering the water system in any premises other than a house, a material change of use, a bath over 230 litres, a bidet with an ascending spray or flexible hose, a pump drawing more than 12 litres a minute, a reduced pressure zone valve, a garden watering system not operated by hand, and pipes laid outside a building less than 750 mm or more than 1,350 mm below ground.
