Frequently asked questions about GSHP Borehole

Do I need permission to drill boreholes for GSHP?
In most cases, borehole drilling for domestic GSHP does not require planning permission. Environmental rules are separate. In England, a closed-loop system installed on or after 2 October 2023 must meet the Environment Agency’s exemption conditions (for example, not in groundwater source protection zone 1 and not within 50 m of a well, spring or borehole supplying drinking water), meet regulatory position statement RPS 307 for a single home system of 45 kW or less, or hold an environmental permit. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules.
How deep are GSHP boreholes?
Typical domestic GSHP boreholes are 60-200m deep, depending on the ground conditions and heat demand. A thermal response test (TRT) may be conducted to determine the ground thermal conductivity before the full installation.
