Why are moisture readings important?
Excess moisture is the number one cause of flooring failure. BS 8203 sets a maximum subfloor moisture level of 75% relative humidity, measured with a hygrometer, before laying moisture-sensitive floorcoverings; otherwise a surface damp-proof membrane is needed. Wood flooring is covered by BS 8201; BS 5325, which covered carpet, was withdrawn in 2021.

Subfloor preparation may include levelling compound to correct unevenness, DPM (damp-proof membrane) for moisture protection, plywood overlay for timber substrates, or grinding/shot-blasting for adhesion. Correct preparation is essential for a lasting installation.
