What ambient CO reading is a concern in a home?
ANSI/BPI-1200-S-2017 (Section 7.3.3.3) sets indoor ambient CO action levels for a home: at 9 to 35 ppm the occupant is told CO has been detected and advised to check sources and open windows; at 36 to 69 ppm sources are turned off and a qualified professional called; at 70 ppm or more the building is evacuated. That is far below OSHA’s 50 ppm occupational limit, which applies to workers, not residents. For comparison, the EPA gives 0.5 to 5 ppm as the average in homes without gas stoves.
What is the difference between ambient CO and flue-gas CO?
Ambient (room) CO measures the air people are breathing, and a reading of 9 ppm or more is an action level under ANSI/BPI-1200-S-2017. Flue-gas CO measures the combustion appliance’s exhaust before it is vented outside, where readings are naturally much higher and are compared against the manufacturer’s specification rather than a room-air standard.
