Frequently asked questions about Lead Service Line Record

When did water systems have to complete their lead service line inventory?
The EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) set an initial compliance deadline of October 16, 2024, for every public water system to complete and make public an inventory of its service line materials, including a category for lines whose material is unknown.
By when must lead service lines be replaced?
Under the EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI), finalized October 2024, community water systems must fully replace all lead and "galvanized requiring replacement" (GRR) service lines by November 1, 2037, at a minimum pace of 10% per year. Partial replacement — leaving either the public or private side in place — is generally prohibited outside narrow emergency-repair circumstances.
