Yes. Under the Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems (Registration) Regulations 2012 (S.I. No. 220/2012), every domestic wastewater treatment system — including septic tanks — must be registered with the local authority.
What is a T-test and a P-test?
Both are percolation tests used in Ireland's site suitability assessment. The T-test is the standard falling-head test; a T-value of 3–50 min/25mm is suitable for a conventional percolation area, 50–75 takes a soil polishing filter, and above 90 the site is unsuitable for discharge to ground (the 2021 EPA Code of Practice allows low-pressure pipe distribution to 90 and drip dispersal to 120). A P-test (shallow test hole) is used where the subsoil calls for a polishing filter at or above ground level, with an acceptable range of 3–75 min/25mm.
What standard must the septic tank or treatment plant meet?
The product must comply with I.S. EN 12566 (Part 1 for prefabricated septic tanks, Part 3 for treatment plants up to 50 PE), as called up by S.R. 66:2015 and Technical Guidance Document H.
