When do I need a CERT 3 rather than a CERT 1?
Use a CERT 3 for one-off or specific gas works — for example, when disconnecting an appliance before a kitchen refit, reconnecting after building work, purging the system, or attending an emergency repair. A CERT 1 is used for new installations or alterations to permanent pipework.
Is a tightness test required for a CERT 3?
It depends on the work. If pipework has been disturbed or reconnected, a tightness test is required. For work such as a standalone appliance disconnection where pipework was not disturbed and was capped, the test section may be marked N/A with a suitable note.
Can a CERT 3 be used for emergency gas work?
Yes. Emergency repairs that do not constitute a full new installation should be documented on a CERT 3. The certificate confirms the installation was made safe before the engineer left site.
