A Solar PV G98 SSEG Commissioning Confirmation certifies that a small-scale embedded generator (SSEG) has been installed, commissioned, and tested in accordance with ENA Engineering Recommendation G98 (or G99 for larger installations). It confirms the inverter protection settings are compliant and records the notification to the DNO, which G98 requires no later than 28 days after commissioning.

What is G98 and when does it apply?

ENA Engineering Recommendation G98 applies to small-scale embedded generators (SSEGs) where all the generators at the premises add up to no more than 16A per phase, typically domestic solar PV systems. Battery storage counts towards that total. It requires the installer to use a type-tested inverter with the protection settings in the standard and to notify the DNO no later than 28 days after commissioning; installations in several premises nearby need DNO approval first. G98 replaced the withdrawn G83/2 for generation commissioned on or after 27 April 2019; larger installations fall under G99.

Do I need a G98 confirmation for every solar PV installation?

For systems up to 16A per phase you must notify the DNO using the G98 process (a G98 notification form). The commissioning confirmation documents that the inverter is set correctly and the system is safe to connect to the distribution network. Installations above the G98 threshold require a G99 application instead.
