Frequently asked questions about Sound Test

When is a sound test required?
For all new-build dwellings and conversions where there is a separating wall or floor between habitable rooms of different dwellings. Detached houses only need testing if they share a wall with another dwelling.
What are the Part E pass criteria?
Approved Document E Tables 0.1a and 0.1b set them. Airborne sound is rated on DnT,w+Ctr: at least 45 dB for walls and floors in purpose-built homes, 43 dB for walls and 45 dB for floors in purpose-built rooms for residential purposes, and 43 dB for both in conversions. Impact sound through floors is rated on L'nT,w: at most 62 dB purpose-built or 64 dB in conversions.
