Geyser Installation Certificate of Compliance (CoC)

The South African Geyser Installation Certificate of Compliance (CoC) is issued by a PIRB-registered plumber on completion of an electric, solar, or heat pump water heater installation, replacement, or repair. It records the SANS 10254 safety components — drip tray, temperature & pressure relief valve, vacuum breakers, and isolation valve. Since 24 June 2022, SANS 10254 itself no longer mandates a CoC nationally, but several municipalities (notably the City of Cape Town), insurers, and property developers still require one. Frequently asked questions about Geyser CoC

Is a plumbing CoC legally required for a geyser in South Africa?

Not nationally — SANS 10254 stopped mandating a CoC for geyser installation, replacement, or repair on 24 June 2022. Some municipalities still require one by their own by-laws (the City of Cape Town is the main example), and many insurers and property developers ask for one regardless of what SANS 10254 says.

Who can issue a Geyser Installation Certificate of Compliance?

A plumber registered with the Plumbing Industry Registration Board (PIRB). Some municipalities, such as Cape Town, additionally require the plumber to hold a separate city registration to issue a CoC valid there.

What safety components does the CoC check?
