A Grade A domestic system uses a BS EN 54-4 power supply, typically sized for 72 hours standby plus 30 minutes of alarm operation on battery power alone, the same 30-minute alarm period as a commercial BS 5839-1 system, but with a longer 72-hour standby because a dwelling may be left unoccupied. (The simpler mains-powered domestic alarms, Grade D, provide 72 hours standby plus 4 minutes of alarm.)

What sounder levels are needed in bedrooms?

BS 5839-6 requires a minimum of 75dB at the bedhead with all doors closed. In general areas, the minimum is 65dB. These levels ensure sleeping occupants are woken in a fire.
