BS 5266-1 requires monthly brief functional tests (flick test) and an annual test at the full rated duration (1 or 3 hours, depending on the system). BS 5266-1:2025 also introduces a periodic photometric verification. All results must be recorded in the log book.

Can I use automatic test systems?

Yes. BS 5266-1 recognises automatic test systems (ATS) which can perform scheduled tests without manual intervention. Results must still be reviewed and recorded, and a physical inspection should supplement automatic testing.
