What do the fire alarm categories mean?
L categories are for life safety (L1 = full coverage, L2 = enhanced, L3 = escape routes and the rooms opening onto them, L4 = escape route corridors and stairways only). LD categories are for domestic dwellings (LD1, LD2, LD3). P categories protect property. The category required depends on the building type and fire risk assessment.
How often does the system need servicing?
BS 5839-1:2025 recommends inspection and servicing of a non-domestic system at intervals of approximately six months (any time between five and seven months after the previous visit), in practice two visits a year by a competent fire alarm engineer. That is separate from the weekly user test of a manual call point, which the responsible person carries out. A service certificate should be issued after each visit.
