Frequently asked questions about Lightning Protection

How often should lightning protection be tested?
BS EN 62305 recommends annual testing and visual inspection. Some insurers and building types (e.g. hospitals, schools) may require more frequent testing. Critical systems should be tested after any known lightning strike.
What earth resistance is acceptable?
The usual target under BS EN 62305 is 10 ohms or less for the whole earthing system, not for each electrode. The single-rod limit came from BS 6651, which was withdrawn in 2008. IET guidance says a system can also comply by having the minimum electrode lengths the standard gives, and that joints and bonds should read no more than 0.2 ohms.
