Solar & Renewable Symbols — Australia (AS/NZS 5033 / 4777)

Frequently asked questions about solar & renewables symbols

Are rooftop DC isolators still required in Australia?
Not as a blanket requirement. Australia was the only country in the world to mandate rooftop DC isolators, from 2012, and inspection data went on to identify them as the single largest source of DC faults in conventional solar systems. AS/NZS 5033:2021 removed the mandate. A rated disconnection point, such as connectors adjacent to the array, combined with a load-break disconnector at the inverter, can be used instead. Older installations still have them, and they still need inspecting.
What did AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 change for inverters?
It introduced demand response modes, so a compliant inverter has to be able to receive and act on signals from the network operator, along with revised grid protection settings. In practice the inverter model and its settings matter to the paperwork, not just the array.
Do I need accreditation to install solar in Australia?
To claim small-scale technology certificates the installation has to be carried out by an installer accredited under the relevant industry scheme, on top of the electrical licence your state requires. The accreditation number generally appears on the compliance paperwork alongside the licence number.
Are Australian solar symbols different from UK ones?
The symbols are the same. A module is a module and an inverter is an inverter. What differs is the isolation and protection arrangement around them, which is where AS/NZS 5033 has diverged from UK practice, and the metering, which follows local feed-in and certificate arrangements.
